Anglo-Saxon Silver Sceat
Series D
Type 8
Double-reverse
1.25g 11.0mm
Spink - 793
North - 50 Rare
Obverse:
Standard containing various symbols, pellet in annulet to centre.
Reverse:
Degraded legend, cross with pellet in each angle.
Good very fine, toned and rare. As both sides of this coin have stylistic parallels among reverse designs of other types and series, the attribution of the obverse and reverse is not self evident. North attributed the cross to the obverse, whereas Abramson catalogued it as the reverse. Metcalf, in his study of Series D, similarly noted that this type effectively combines two reverse designs. See SCBI 69 - Abramson Collection, numbers 179-84.
