Henry I Silver Penny
Star in Lozenge Fleury
Ealdwine on Shaftesbury
1.31g 19.2mm
Spink - 1274
North - 869 Rare
Obverse:
HENRIC[V]S R. Crowned bust, looking left holding sceptre.
Reverse:
ALDPINE ON [SEFT]. Quadrilateral cross fleury, star in centre, annulets in angles.
A hairline fracture running to the centre and a little weak in parts otherwise about very fine. Exceptionally rare with only one other example listed on EMC or SCBI, which is from the same die pair - EMC 1200.0056. This EMC example is Ex Conte, Lockett and P. Carlyon-Britton, and now off the market and in the Fitzwilliam Museum Collection. At the time of the Lockett sale it was described as “probably unique”, suggesting this offered coin may be the only example in private hands.
From the J.C. Rowell Collection
