Obverse:

IACOBVS D G MA BRI FRAN ET HI REX. Crowned bust r. with value mark XII behind.

Reverse:

QVÆ DEVS CONIVNX[IT] NEMO SEPARET. Large shield.

Some light scratches and a surface flaw on the neck, about very fine, toned and very rare. During the second coinage, the mintmark Trefoil was used for the short period between 28th April 1613 to 20th October 1613, when silver coin production was already steadily declining. In his die study of James I shillings, the late Gary Oddie was only able to locate 19 examples of this mintmark for the second issue shilling. This obverse is catalogued as Oddie O5, the only obverse die reading FRAN, which is recorded muled with a Cinquefoil reverse. This present reverse die, with almost vertical harp strings, is unrecorded.
