Obverse:
CAROLVS D G M B F ET H REX. Crude bust l. value mark III behind.
Reverse:
CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO. Oval garnished shield.
Pierced, otherwise about very fine, toned, a nice example of this rare issue with good provenance.
Ex Lyall Collection
Ex Carlyon-Britton Collection (XIV, 772); bt Seaby 1964.
Note:
A disproportionate number of Worcester groats and threepences are found holed. The large size and careful execution of the piercings suggest they were contemporary and that the coins were given as presentation pieces to soldiers, perhaps to be worn in the same way as a Royalist badge – a practice not seen elsewhere.
