Throughout the reign of Aethelred II, dies were cut at regional centres, which supplied them not only for their own mints but also for smaller neighbouring mints. This decentralised system continued into the early part of Cnut’s reign with 19 regional centres producing dies in distinctive styles during the Quatrefoil issue. However, this practice was overhauled with the introduction of the Pointed Helmet issue, when die-cutting became centralised in workshops believed to be located in London. An exception to this centralisation occurred in parts of the North-East and for a short time, the East Midlands mints via Lincoln cutters. While many mints in these regions eventually adopted dies from the central workshops, York retained its die-cutting authority. York preserved the old abbreviation ‘M‾O’ copulative between the moneyer and mint, while all others bar Lincoln and a few rare exceptions, adopted the newer ‘ON’ format.
