Edward III Gold Half Noble
Treaty Period - Group A
Calais - Flag at stern
3.78g 25.0mm
Spink - 1508
North - 1240 Very Rare
Obverse:
EDWARD DEI G REX ANGL D HYB Z AQT. King standing facing in a ship, sword in right hand, shield in left. Annulet before EDWARD, double satire stops, flag at stern.
Reverse:
DOMINE NE IN FVRORE TVO ARGVAS ME. Floriated cross with lis terminals, lions between with crowns above, C in centre, all within tressure of eight arches.
Slabbed and graded NGC AU53 and very rare. Although all the treaty Calais half noble are very rare, group A, with saltire before Edward and trefoils by Z, is even more so, noted by just a single clipped example (with flag at stern) in the Doubleday Collection, lot 270; which is now the sole example in the Schneider Collection, number 95. This coin is from the same die pair, but on a full flan.
Ex G. Slater Collection [bt Spink, 26 April 1991]
