William II Silver Penny
Profile Type
Swetman on Oxford
1.25g 19.6mm
Spink – 1258
North – 851 Rare
Obverse:
PILLELM REX. Crowned bust, facing right, holding a sword.
Reverse:
SPÆTMAN ON OXNE. Cross pattée with an annulet in centre, over cross fleury.
A few small perforations and some light marks otherwise very fine, dark tone and unique. This moneyer previously unknown for this type and now recorded with Dr M. Allen. This fills the gap for Swetman an Oxford, with examples only previously known for type 2 and 3 for William II. The mint also very rare for this type with only 2 examples from other moneyers on EMC/SCBI. Swetman is mentioned in the Domesday Book among the tenants in capite at Oxford as monetarius.
