Ex Beauworth Hoard, 1833
The Beauworth Hoard was discovered on the 30th June, 1883 near the Manor House, Beauworth, Hampshire. It was a chance find by 4 boys while playing marbles in a small pasture. A piece of lead was seen protruding from the exposed earth of a recent cart track and upon removal, a small hole was discovered. The boys extracted handfuls of coins from the hole and unconcernedly spread the coins throughout the local village. Once villagers learnt of the discovery a scramble ensued to collected the treasure and the find soon came to the attention of the landowner, Mr. Dunn, of Alresford who requested their return. A total of 6,500 coins were handed in and sent for examination at the British Museum. Apart from around 100 coins, all were of the William I PAXS coinage and it was estimated the container would have held between 8,000 and 9,000 coins.
