Class 2b represents the first class of Edward I coinage, in his own name, struck at Durham. Although the dies were ordered by writ on 2 November 1279, production was delayed due to a failure to surrender all dies from the previous long cross coinage. This class was struck under Bishop Robert de Insula (Robert of Holy Island), whose Latin byname reflects his origin at Lindisfarne. He was elected Bishop of Durham in 1274 and held the postition continuously until his death on 7 June 1283.
