Obverse:
PLLEMVS REX III. Crowned bust facing left with sceptre in front.
Reverse:
LEOFPOLD N PININEI. Cross fleury with annulet in centre.
Good very fine, toned and with a very rare spelling of the mint. This obverse die, with ending III for AN, was not known to Harvey. The reverse is recorded from only a single example, which is pierced - SCBI 18 Copenhagen. Part III A, number 1355 (Harvey die j - 1901).
Due to the rare rendering of the mint name, the following sales have been traced, which, given the rarity, grade and cabinet toning, may both represent this current specimen:
H. A. Parsons Collection, Sotheby Auction, 28 Oct 1929 - Lot 222 - "First issue, “ Profile-Cross Fleury ” type ... Rev. +LEOFPOLD II PININEI (Winchester), extremely fine and an unusual mint reading"
G. C. Drabble Collection, Glendining Auction, 6 Jul 1939 - Lot 556 (part) "Type I ... Winchester LEOFPOLD U PININEI (unusual spelling of mint) ... extremely fine and rare"
