The sovereign pence under Bishop Richard Fox likely ran between 1494 and 1500, with this type being the first produced and notably with the mitre above the shield. It is suggested that Fox came into contact with Henry Tudor while in France and following Henry’s accession to the throne in 1485, became a trusted adviser. Fox was appointed Bishop of Durham in 1494 and had earlier, in 1491, been responsible for baptising the future King Henry VIII.
