Some silver flaws otherwise very fine, with a pleasing tone and very rare, especially in this condition. During the second coinage, the mintmark Trefoil was used for the short period between 28th April 1613 to 20th October 1613, when silver coin production was already steadily declining. In his die study of James I shillings, the late Gary Oddie was only able to locate 19 examples of this mintmark for the second issue shilling. This obverse is catalogued as Oddie P1–O1; the reverse die is unrecorded.
