Obverse:

HENRICVS REX. Facing crowned bust holding sceptre. Hair in 2 curls left and 5 right, stop before REX.

Reverse:

IEFREI ON LVND. Voided short cross with quatrefoil in each angle.

Very fine and richly toned. The die sinker’s error exceptionally rare and interesting.

A die engraver’s error resulted in the reverse short cross design being mistakenly punched onto the obverse die. The die was later overpunched with the portrait, leaving remnants of the short cross design visible in the fields. A similar, though poorer, example appears in SCBI Mass, no. 313–4 (1b1 – Reinald on London), noted as “traces of reverse design under portrait on obv.”

We have found two other examples, one from this die pair, in lesser condition, which we sold in January 2022 (D1456 - £650) and another, also class 1b1 but from Turkil on York (D1607 - £685), which we sold in April 2023. This coin is by far the best and clearest example we have seen.
