Henry VI Silver Groat
Trefoil Issue
Class A
Calais
3.43g 25.9mm
Spink - 1911
North - 1497 Rare
Obverse:
[HENR]IC DI GRA REX ANG Z F[RAN]. Crowned facing bust in tressure of arches. Trefoils by neck and after DI and REX.
Reverse:
POSVI DEVM ADIVTORE MEVM, VILLA CALISIE. Long cross pattée dividing the legend, with three pellets in each angle. Trefoil after TORE, VIL and SIE.
Lightly clipped and a minor striking split otherwise good fine, toned and rare. In addition to its rarity, this issue is numismatically important, being the last groats produced at the Calais mint. This reverse legend, although similar to Whitton 35a and 35b, was unknown to him, having a single saltire stop after LA and possibly double saltire stops after DEVM.
